Description

2-Ethylhexanol (abbreviated as 2-EH, CAS No.: 104-76-7) is a long-chain primary alcohol produced via the hydroformylation of propylene to n-butyraldehyde, followed by aldol condensation and hydrogenation. It is the highest-volume and most widely used plasticizer alcohol globally. Approximately 80% of its production is consumed in manufacturing phthalate plasticizers, with the most important product being di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, commonly known as DOP). DOP serves as the primary plasticizer in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, imparting excellent flexibility, extensibility, and processability. It is extensively used in wires and cables, synthetic leather, flooring, films, hoses, and other applications. Besides being a plasticizer feedstock, 2-EH can also react with polybasic acids (e.g., adipic acid, sebacic acid) to produce cold-resistant plasticizers with superior low-temperature performance. As a solvent, it is used in coatings, inks, adhesives, and extraction processes. Its derivative, sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate, is an important anionic surfactant. Furthermore, it is used as a diesel fuel additive, mineral flotation agent, defoamer, and anti-wear additive in lubricants.
