Description

Diethanolamine (abbreviated as DEA, CAS No.: 111-42-2) is a key member of the ethanolamine series (monoethanolamine MEA, diethanolamine DEA, triethanolamine TEA), produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide with aqueous ammonia followed by distillation and separation. Its molecular structure contains one secondary amino group and two hydroxyethyl groups, imparting excellent alkalinity, water solubility, and reactivity with organic acids.
In gas purification, its aqueous solutions are widely used in natural gas processing, synthetic ammonia, and refining industries to absorb and remove acidic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). It is a key component in decarbonization processes like the "Benfield" solution.
In surfactants and personal care, the alkanolamides (e.g., 6501, 6502) formed by the reaction of DEA with coconut fatty acid are highly effective nonionic surfactants and foam stabilizers, extensively used in shampoos, body washes, and light-duty detergents as thickeners and foam modifiers. It is also used as a softener and lubricant in the textile and leather industries.
As an industrial additive, DEA is an important corrosion inhibitor used in boiler water treatment, metalworking fluids, automotive antifreeze, and various lubricants. Additionally, it serves as an acid acceptor and plasticizer in adhesives.
In chemical synthesis, DEA is a critical intermediate for the production of the herbicide glyphosate. Dehydration cyclization with sulfuric acid yields morpholine (1,4-oxazacyclohexane), an important pharmaceutical and chemical intermediate. In the polyurethane industry, DEA is used as a cross-linking agent in the production of high-resilience foam.
