Description

Ethylene glycol (abbreviated as EG or MEG, CAS No.: 107-21-1) is the simplest saturated diol, produced by the hydration of ethylene oxide. Its most notable characteristics are its strong hygroscopicity and its ability to significantly depress the freezing point. Globally, ethylene glycol serves two major end-use markets: 1. Polyester Industry Chain: Over half of MEG production is used in the condensation polymerization with terephthalic acid (PTA) to produce polyethylene terephthalate (PET). PET is the cornerstone for manufacturing synthetic fibers (polyester), polyester bottle resins, polyester films, and engineering plastics, forming a vast chemical fiber and packaging industry. 2. Antifreeze/Coolants: Approximately one-quarter to one-third of MEG is used as the primary component in automotive and industrial engine antifreeze and de-icing fluids. When mixed with water, it significantly lowers the freezing point, raises the boiling point, and provides corrosion inhibition. In other chemical sectors, ethylene glycol is used to produce unsaturated polyester resins (for fiberglass), glycol ether solvents, surfactants (e.g., polyethylene glycol), plasticizers (e.g., ethylene glycol diacetate), explosives (nitroglycol), and as a desiccant for gas dehydration.
